Teachers, Staff Out After Immigration Check at Bilingual Daycare

The 60 teachers represented almost 40 percent of the school's staff

Kingfield's Jardin Magico daycare center lost as many as 60 teachers and staff—nearly 40 percent of all employees—last week, according to the Star Tribune. 

The center, who had recently announced plans to expand into Maple Grove and Eden Prairie, was targeted in a "routine" investigation by the Minneapolis branch of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The 60 staff left after ICE named them as having suspect or insufficient immigration documents. The school maintains the staff are free to return as soon as they clear up any legal issues or disputes with ICE.

The departures caused a great deal of emotional distress for parents and children alike.

“Some very, very strong personal bonds existed between the affected teachers and the little children and their parents,” John Keller, director of the Minnesota Immigrant Law Center, which is advising some of the teachers, told the newspaper. “It is obviously producing a lot of sadness, a lot of heartache.”
