UPDATED: Phase II of Nicollet Avenue Reconstruction to Begin Next Week

Weather permitting, of course.

As long as winter truly ends after Tuesday's expected snowfall, the reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue South will enter Phase II next week.

According to the city of Minneapolis, the contractor for this year's work, Thomas and Sons, has set a start date of *May 1. (Of course, the start date is contingent on the weather.)

The street was originally constructed in 1954 and an asphalt overlay was done in 1977, according to the project's webpage. The first phase of the reconstruction project was completed at the end of the 2012 construction season, and focused on the area between Lake and 36th streets. The second and final phase will revamp Nicollet from 36th Street to 40th Street.

The final product will feature two traffic lanes, one in each direction, with partking on both sides. In addition, the project includes the removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveways, sidewalks, and storm drain inlets.

Stakeholder construction updates 

Public Works will hold construction update meetings. These meetings are to provide an opportunity to learn what is happening with the construction and share potential issues and concerns.   At this point, meetings will be scheduled for 9am on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of May and June. We may adjust the frequency of the meetings based on needs and meeting attendance.

The first meeting will provide an opportunity to meet and be introduced to Bob, the on-site inspector, and myself.

May/July – Construction area  –  south of 36th St to just south of 38th St

August/October – Construction area  – south of 38th St to 40th St

OTHER CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION

Minneapolis Traffic has completed the installation of temporary lighting from 36th St to 40th St.

Minneapolis Water has been working necessary valve replacements, valve replacements are still needed at the intersection of 38th and Nicollet.  In mid-May they will start working on installing the temporary water line which will be needed for the water department to clean and line the existing main.  The schedule for this will be shared as it's available.
