Park Board to Remove 5,000+ Trees On Top of Storm Damage

Removal intendent to retard Emerald Ash Borer spread.

To deal with the threat of Emerald Ash Borer insects, the Minneapolis Park Board is planning to remove all elm trees from the city's golf courses, plus 5,000 more elms on streets and in parks this year, according to MinnPost.

Ash represent a healthy chunk of the city's trees. The removal plan would target around 20 percent of the ash on every city block.

As Patch reported earlier this year, Emerald Ash Borers were discovered in Southwest Minneapolis in February.

The planned ash removal comes on the heels of last month's thunderstorms, which toppled many street trees around the city. In response, Linden Hills-based People for Parks foundation—one of two philanthropic organizations that support the Park Board's work—is planning to use money raised at its anual 5k race in September to fund replacement, according to a press release the group issued on Friday.
