Minnesota Nonprofits Petition For Funding

A special master is deciding, case by case, whether to help organizations through the state government shutdown.

The Minnesota Judicial Center and the Hennepin County Courthouse are closed until July 5, security officers at both facilities confirmed Saturday.

Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Kathleen Blatz began hearing petitions Friday morning from a bevy of Minnesota’s nonprofit organizations requesting funding during the shutdown. These organizations weren't included in the initial ruling of critical core services written June 29 by Ramsey County District Court Judge Kathleen Gearin.

Rulings on the 22 petitions for funding—including requests by the Minnesota Zoo, Minnesota Coalition of Battered Women, Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Canterbury Park—may come over the weekend, but won't hear any new appeals until after the holiday. Nonprofit organizations seeking to join the queue are in luck, because petitions for funding will continue to be received and processed through the holiday weekend.

Patch will continue to provide updates on the rulings both here and on our Facebook page and Twitter at @SWMplsPatch #shutdown.
