Calling it a way for Progressives to get their voice heard in Washington politics, Rep. Keith Ellison's campaign is asking constituents to send in their reactions to President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech on Tuesday night.
“Rep. Ellison’s campaign wants to engage with voters and give them an opportunity to make their voices heard,” said campaign manager Will Hailer.
Ellison is asking constituents to tweet him with their thoughts or submit comments using an online form.
For his part, Ellison praised the President's speech.
“President Obama delivered a vision tonight for an America in which, as my hero, Minnesotan Paul Wellstone said, ‘We all do better when we all do better,’” Rep. Ellison said in a written statement. “The President believes that everyone deserves a fair shake; that everyone deserves a shot at the American Dream; that everyone should pay their fair share, not just the middle class; and that we all do better when we all do better, not just the 1%."
Everett Pettiford, a Minneapolis native and 40-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, joined Ellison in the House chambers. Pettiford was the first black Business Representative and Financial Secretary for IBEW Local 292.
When people who have taken the time to investigate, know that Buffet has structured his salary so that it is only $100k per year while he takes millions a year as Capital gains. And at the same time his secretary is paying income tax on her $200k per year. Again it's the old comparing apples to oranges in 20 second sound bites. Why aren’t people calling him out on this BS??? And if Buffet is so concerned about wanting to pay more in taxes, why has his company Birkshire Hathaway been fighting their tax bill for the last 10 years?? And why did he structure his income to be only $100k instead of all that he earns??
But I can't be the only one who thinks that this is at least somewhat hypocritical that he goes to these lengths to protect his income and then turns around and blasts that his secretary pays a higher tax than he does. Buffet is a very smart man. He should know that if he wanted, he could pay more taxes than what he does.
On the one hand politicians like the President and Ellison want the rich to invest in order to create jobs. They also want to legislate how much of investment they are allowed to profit from. My approach would be to dramatically revise the 72k plus page tax code because its currently nothing more than a full employment bill for lobbyists (Dem and GOP), lawyers and CPA's. We can also strengthen our safety net programs to ensure only the truly needy benefit from them. This can be done while returning critical resources back to the states where they came from and where they belong. The real question for the voters in 2012 is do we want a government that tells us to succeed, doesnt give us the resources we need to succeed and if we do make it, set a limit on how much success we can enjoy.
Who then will pay 15% "Income" tax......
And as far as your claims that Obama's "Adminsitrations" is trying to do things that are not in the Constitution, doesn't every president get criticized for that? Bush, Clinton, Reagan, etc? That was a rhetorical question, meaning you don't need to answer it, because really none of this has anything to do with feedback on Obama's speech.
I'd love to see more emphasis on new kinds of energy and more rebates for taxpayers for buying energy efficient appliances. It's nice to get some of my tax dollars back when I buy a new fridge or windows. I bought some windows a few years ago and received the tax rebate and my energy bills dropped as well.
I have a question. Why should the government ( that would be us ) pay people to buy things that save them money?????
