Dibble Says Cut-Heavy Higher Ed Bill Hurts Economy

The conference version of the bill, which cuts hundreds of millions of dollars from state higher education, will soon face Gov. Mark Dayton's veto pen.

Drastic cuts to higher education passed the state Senate and House Monday.

The bill cuts the University of Minnesota budget by $234 million and $167 million from the Minnesota State Colleges and University (MnSCU) budgets.

Sen. Scott Dibble (DFL-Minneapolis) said cuts proposed by the Republican majority would lead to massive tuition hikes, increased class sizes and damage to Minnesota's economy for decades. Dibble said this was supposed to be the "jobs and economy" session, but that the legislature is moving in the opposite direction.
