Local Man Faces Drug Charges After Yelling at Police

A local man has been charged with marijuana possession after authorities say he stood outside the 5th Precinct offices on Nicollet Avenue South and yelled expletives about police.

Leroy Jasper Davis III, 24, who lives in the 3200 block of Nicollet Avenue South, is charged with fifth-degree drug possession, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

A Minneapolis police officer was parked in a marked squad car outside the 5th Precinct at 3101 Nicollet Ave. S. on Dec. 29 when he heard someone yelling, “[Expletive] the police,” according to the complaint, signed by Minneapolis Police Sgt. Thomas Peterson.

The officer asked the man, later identified as Davis, what was wrong. Davis became belligerent and said, “[Expletive] you, you ain’t going to give me a ride,” the complaint says.

The officer asked Davis to walk toward him, and Davis began to stumble, having trouble keeping his balance and grabbing his waistband, according to the complaint. The officer patted him down and found two large bindles of marijuana from his waistband.

The marijuana weighed 53.4 grams, or 1.8 ounces.

Davis has been released from custody on a $3,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Feb. 12 in Hennepin County District Court.
