New Year's in August. (Is that like Christmas in July?)

Back to school time at Burroughs=New Year, part II

3, 2, 1.....Happy New Year!!!!  Well, kind of.  Every New Year I look forward to January 1st to have the feelings of new beginnings, new goals, and a vision of prosperity.  These same feelings are brought to the surface at this time of the year as we get ready for the new school year.  It is New Year’s in August!  It is back to school time at Burroughs Community School!

What goals do your kids have for themselves?  More importantly, what goals do we have as parents?  As a parent I make these "Hollywood" goals that I strive to achieve at the beginning of every school year. From the minute they get off the bus, we are going to live every minute to the fullest.  We will have deep talks, like Tom Corbott had with Eddie, in The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.  We are going to have home cooked meals, like Uncle Charlie had in My Three Sons.  We are going to solve sibling conflicts like Cliff Huxtable did in The Bill Cosby Show (Yes, I have been watching too much TV Land).  Then, the TV is turned off, or should I say reality sets in.  My kids don’t want to talk.  There is barely enough time to turn on the microwave to make dinner due to after-school activities and homework.  And, the sibling conflicts turn into mass chaos.

As in my own New Year’s resolutions, I must remember not to make my goals too idealistic.  What do they say about goals?  We need to make them small, make them attainable, and work every day the best you can to reach them.  What is important is that we are trying and striving to be the best we can be for our kids, for our family,  and for our school community.  We will accept that today we tried our best, and look forward to tomorrow as another day to strive to be even better.  Hey, I think I just figured out what my goal for New Year’s in August will be.  What is yours?
