(BLOG) My Old Friend Sammie

"A sandwich is always good, but it's even better when it's made by someone else."

I've had a long-term relationship with the sandwich.

Sometimes it's one filled with love, like when my mom made them for me and together we cycled through weeks of peanut butter banana, peanut butter and honey, and then peanut butter and jelly. I enjoyed every sticky bite of it and it was made better because it was made with care by my mom, who made sure every last milimeter of bread was covered with deliciousness.

As I grew, so did my tastes, though, truth-be-told, I still love a good peanut butter sammie.  Now my sandwiches include such things as avocado, sprouts, thinly sliced radishes, and cucumbers.  Hummus sometimes replaces my old pal peanut butter, but not always. I have had brief flings with most of the fast-food sandwich shops, but nothing long-term. Some were even so horrible they verged on sending me to therapy.

I have recently made a new sammie friend, though, and perhaps something lasting is on the horizon.

My new sammies are conveniently available right on the corner of 46th and Bryant, housed at the deli counter in the back of Guse Green Grocer. I should point out that they are not available on Mondays, because I have made that mistake a few times.

Guse offers a variety of sandwiches, made-to-order if you prefer, and chock full of organic and/or local produce depending on your selections. I recently had the kind woman at the counter create a vegetarian version, stuffed with hummus and guacamole, red pepper, leafy greens, tomato and onion. I've also sampled their chicken salad and a nicely spiced roast beef and horseradish. There is fresh soup available as well, if you'd like to add that on and have an even heartier lunch. As an added bonus, all sandwiches are served on fresh, toothsome and wonderful bread from our old neighborhood friend, Rustica Bakery. I recommend the Levain, but ask the folks as Guse if you want a recommendation, they are happy to help.

It's not often that a neighborhood still gets the benefit of a family-run corner store, and it's even more rare that the local corner store offers some fresh, made to order sammies.  Like my mom told me years ago, "A sandwich is always good, but it's even better when it's made by someone else." I agree. Yet another reason that I may have found a sandwich shop I can stick with...unless my mom is around. In that case, I'll be at home enjoying a peanut butter and honey.
