Weekend Day Trip: Kellogg, MN

Check out Lark Toys and the National Eagle Center in one trip not far from the Twin Cities.

What kid doesn’t love toys and wildlife?

A great place to take kids, especially that of grade school age and younger, is Lark Toys in Kellogg, Minnesota and the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minn. Located along the Mississippi River between Red Wing and Winona, it is a trip of less than two hours from the Twin Cities.

Lark Toys has toys galore including a number of hand-carved wooden and collectibles. It also has a carousel, bookstore, miniature golf and a fudge store.

The National Eagle Center in nearby Wabasha is devoted to conservation, research and education. The center is home to several eagles that are tethered, and thus can be observed close up by visitors. All the eagles live there permanently in that they do not fly because of previous injuries. All this is housed in a modern 14,000 square foot interpretative center.

You can even have your picture taken with an eagle.

Information on Lark Toys is available by visiting www.larktoys.com and the National Eagle Center is at www.nationaleaglecenter.org. However, the Eagle Center’s web site, while available, is undergoing new construction.
