Patch Picks: Five Great South Minneapolis Non-Profits

Every week we link to five things, this time around we're featuring local non-profits that do good work in the community.

Nicollet Square:
This is a 150-unit housing and retail development geared to the needs of homeless youth at 37th Street and Nicollet Avenue. It opened right around the holidays. The center also provides counseling and job resources to the youth.

Simpson Housing:
This non-profit is committed to providing shelter for homeless people. The organization provides dozens of opportunities to volunteer, from serving breakfast to organizing awareness campaigns.

The Aliveness Project:
The longtime non-profit is currently renovating their new space at 38th Street and Nicollet Avenue. The organization provides food, health and counseling for people with HIV/Aids.

Playwrights' Center:
Formed in 1971 in the Seward neighborhood, this non-profit puts on labs and workshops for playwrights, as well as underwriting fellowships.

St. Stephen's Human Services:
Originally formed as a project of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, this non-profit provides emergency shelter and social work counseling for the homeless. Although there are many volunteer opportunities, there's a particular need for those willing to staff the shelter weekend nights.
