The Uptake 24 September 2004

Doug Mann was among the 8 candidates on stage in a 2 hour candidate forum at the U of M on September 24. There were 8 questions, every candidate got 60 seconds to answer each question. The video allows you to skip ahead, so you can hear Doug Mann's response to all the questions in about 15 minutes or so. Doug Mann was 5th to speak in round 1, 4th in round 2, etc.

The Minnesota Daily ran the following inaccurate story about the forum:

Students, candidates talk about Dinkytown

Eight mayoral hopefuls expressed support for development in Dinkytown, by Alexi Gusso

Doug Mann did not express support for development in Dinkytown, did not express support for the Opus project, is not a supporter of "Dinkytown development," and does not support the Opus project.

Mann did not specifically address Dinkytown development projects, but instead spoke on the theme of making housing affordable to all, stopping mortgage foreclosures, using special assessments and the power of eminent domain to reduce the stock of vacant, bank-owned, properties, and of achieving greater racial integration of the city's neighborhoods by empowering the

Minneapolis Civil Rights department to detect and prosecute those engaged in covert, illegal discrimination in employment and housing.

During the course of the forum, Mann called for action to eliminate poverty, including a hike in the minimum wage to $15 per hour for workers employed in Minneapolis, the abolition of tuition for students at public

universities, and forgiveness of student loans as part of the City's legislative agenda.

Mann was the only candidate to reject "corporate school reforms" and to support job protections for teachers. The six mayoral candidates who also attended a September 17 Education forum (Mann was not invited) backed the corporate school reform agenda that Doug Mann opposes as being a labor-relations agenda masquerading as a school improvement agenda that includes taking away basic job protections for teachers, such as seniority, tenure, and due process rights.
