Any holiday in Southwest Minneapolis wouldn't be complete without a culinary adventure. To wit: Halloween and the Day of the Dead are just around the corner, and Kingfield's Cafe Ena is joining neighboring Colorwheel Gallery and Lynnhurst's Zinnia Folk Arts to mark the occasion with their fourth-annual celebratory dinner.
Zinnia Folk Arts' Anne Damon held candle-lit events Oct. 12, 19, and 26 to explain the in's and out's of the Mexican holiday el Día de los Muertos, illustrated with photos from Damon's innumerable trips through Mexico and pieces of folk art from her shop. The whole holiday, Damon told Patch, is like American Thanksgiving for those still in the land of the living as families gather to celebrate the lives of dead friends and relatives.
At the Colorwheel Gallery, owner Tammy Ortegon is planning a full-blown Day of the Dead celebration on Nov. 4 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., replete with sweet treats and folk art-making. Ortegon will supply materials for both adults and kids to enjoy making masks and collage art.
But the real culinary adventure is taking place at Cafe Ena next door. For just $30 (before tax and tip), Ena's servers—their faces painted to look like decorative 'sugar skulls'—will bring you selections from this prix fixe menu:
Sopa Azteca: A Savory Gaujillo Soup served with avocado, tortilla strips, cilantro, crema & queso
Chile en Nogada : A roasted Poblano pepper stuffed with ground beef, almonds and raisins, served in a apple walnut sauce, with a pomegranate glaze
Barbacoa Braised pork shoulder served with frijoles borrachos, parsley rice, garnished with pickled red onions
Cornmeal crusted grouper served with huitlacoche mashed potatoes, served with sautéed greens, in a ancho butter sauce topped with a pineapple salsa
Homemade churros served with cinnamon ice cream and a chocolate ganache for dipping
Traditional Homemade flan served in a caramel sauce
The special menu runs from Oct. 31 through Nov. 4, and special tarot card readings will be available at dinner on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Reservations at Ena can be made by calling the restaurant at 612-824-4441
