Romeo Loves Art, Not Juliet

Romeo Love Studio opened last month in Tangletown.

Romeo Love Studio at 48th Street and Grand Avenue may be on a quiet corner in Tangletown, off the main roads, but it sure is hard to miss.

A veritable neon rainbow beams from the shop window, product of owner Linda Bachman's self-professed love of color. For example, she took her grandmother's old writing desk, and painted it a vibrant electric blue. It now hangs out in the corner of her studio-cum-gallery as a place to write reciepts and hold business cards.

"I've always done art," Bachman said. "My last of five kids went to college (this fall), leaving me free. This is really my passion."

In a kalidescope of a space, a few of Bachman's pieces stand out by being so muted. Bachman says she experiments with a numer of different media—and the store's contents are evidence of that, from tables to jewelry to onesies—but her photo collages are her favorite. In one, a large, over-saturated eye stares out from the image, framed by a bouquet and a bird rendered in a muted, washed-out pallet. Amid the bright clothes, necklaces, and refinished vintage furniture, they're intriguing, leaving more questions than answers.

Romeo Love is open the third weekend of every month, plus irregular times during the week.
