Popeyes to Take Over Richfield, Twin Cities KFC Restaurants

A bankrupt Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee is selling 14 metro area locations, according to the Star Tribune.

Popeyes, the nation's second larges fried chicken chain, is nipping at the heels of Kentucky Fried Chicken, the nation's largest chain, as it makes a major push to strengthen its presence in the Twin Cities.

According to the Star Tribune, AFC Enterprises, Popeyes' Atlanta-based parent company, agreed to buy 14 Twin Cities KFC restaurants from a bankrupt KFC franchisee. The Richfield location at the HUB Shopping Center is one of the restaurants slated for sale. Other locations include those in Hopkins, Savage, Rosemount and Bloomington.

Currently, Popeyes has just one Twin Cities restaurant location on Lake Street in Minneapolis near Uptown. A total of 28 restaurants are part of the $13.8 million deal, with other restaurant outlets in northern California, according to the Star Tribune article.

KFC's parent, Yum Brands Inc., isn't exactly pleased with the Popeyes take over. The company said KFC "intends to make every effort to see that as many restaurants as possible continue to operate as KFC restaurants with the same employee teams but under new ownership."

I would love to see Popeye's franchises pop up all throughout MN. I've been saying for years that if someone were to open up one here in St. Cloud, they'd have a "Gold Mine!" As it stands right now, I have to make a special trip down to Lake Street about once every 3 months to get my "fix" of Popeye's. It'd be at least a couple times a week if we had one within reasonable distance of St. Cloud. I wonder just how big a business they'd do if they opened one up at McStop in St. Cloud or Clearwater Travel Plaza exits. Even at the Hasty/Silver Lake exit. Come on Popeye's, start recruiting for a lot more of your restaurants in MN. If I had the capital to invest and start one up, I would have done so years ago already.

KFC has been failing for years. I feel bad for the franchisees but it is what it is. Hopefully the Popeye's takeover will be good for all involved, including us, because Popeye's really is a superior product line.

Horrible for all the people who worked at these stores. Associates to Senior Management are out of jobs now.
