Local Chefs Named Top Food Award Finalists

The James Beard award is top industry accolade.

Is it something in the water? Shortly after seeing for a prestigious food award, three more are named semi-finalists in the big-name James Beard Awards. Think of them like the Pulitzer Prize or Oscar of the food world. Finalists will be announced Mar. 19.

  • Chef Doug Flicker, : Since it opened in January 2009, Piccolo has been turning heads—including celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's—with its small, artistic dishes and constantly rotating menu. Flicker is up for "Best Chef" in the Midwest.
  • Chef Steven Brown, : Also a finalist for the Heavy Table's Silver Whisk award for best new establishment, this Linden Hills eatery seems to be on everybody's radar. Brown is also up for "Best Chef" in the Midwest.
  • Chef Stewart Woodman, Heidi's: While no longer a "local" in the strictest sense, Heidi's got its start in Lynhurst before a Feb. 2010 grease fire gutted their old home. Now ensconsed at Lynlake, the restaurant is making a strong comeback. Woodman is also up for "Best Chef" in the Midwest.
