Film on former Kingfield Residents Turned Farmers Screens Tonight

The film shows at the Trylon cinema.

Dirty Work is a documentary about a couple running a farm that specializes in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), where famers sell shares of the produce directly to households in cities.

The film follows Don Roberts and Joni Cash, former Kingfield residents who helped found the farmers market, as they struggle with the realities of running a farm.

Filmaker Deb Wallwork said the documentary grew out of her involvement with the couple's CSA.

"The way they were containing costs is they had a work requrement and I never showed up at any of the workdays," she told Southwest Minneapolis Patch. "I said I'm not going to be out there digging weeds—that is just not me—but maybe I can do some filming."

As she spent time on the farm, Wallwork captured some of the hurdles the couple ran into in their attempts to both grow food and grow community. As they aged, the work got more difficult, she said. Although, they've adjusted in ways I won't spoil here.

The film is screening Wednesday at the Trylon cinema on 3528 Minnehaha Avenue South, at 7 p.m. (sold out) and 8:30 p.m. It will also be showing at the Seward Co-op in September.

Wallwork said she'd be very interested in having teachers use the film in classes: "This is really a film that kind of explains to different people what a CSA is and how it works."
