Press release from Perpich Arts High School.

The Perpich integrated arts production, “In School, A Secret is Not a Secret Unless the Whole School Knows,” will travel to schools throughout Minnesota in December and January. The live show is based on Perpich student writing and interviews and journal entries from students in several middle schools and portrays the serious and not-so-serious aspects of attending middle school—isn’t EVERYTHING serious in middle school?

The show was created through a collaboration of 51 students from multiple art areas at Perpich Arts High School, who conceived, wrote, scored and designed the show with teachers from music, dance, media arts, theater and integrated art-science. The funny and poignant aspects of being a middle-schooler come to life through compelling vignettes, dance, music and theme-related public service announcements. “Holding a mirror up to the middle school students allows them the opportunity to understand that they are not in it alone and creates common goals for the community,” said Tory Peterson, show director and integrated arts coordinator at Perpich.

The production will travel to the following schools, some of which participated in providing the middle school stories used to create the show. Community members are welcome to attend the school performances, but must sign in as guests at the schools. Participating schools and performance times are:

This play concludes a three-year middle-school program, which has reached 4,000 middle school students statewide and appeared at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Neb. Next fall the program will shift into an art-science focus. Now under development, the ArtScience at Perpich will engage students and teachers in in-depth learning in the arts, sciences and idea development to cultivate creativity and the ability to realize innovative project ideas generated in the classroom. The program then will expand throughout the state.
