Wanted: Driver For All-Electric Collector's Car. Ferries 40,000 People Per Year.

The restored streetcar line is searching for drivers to help carry its summer riders.

Southwest Minneapolis's , restored to mid-century grandeur, takes more than 40,000 people per summer between Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun for a $2 fare.

However, the organization is struggling to find volunteer drivers for its streetcars this year. They're looking for anyone who enjoys working with children, helping people explore history—and drive streetcars.

The line is run and maintained entirely by volunteer streetcar enthusiasts.

On Thursday afternoon, two volunteers (and one young enthusiast) took Southwest Minneapolis Patch on a joyride in advance of the line's May opening, and even taught us how to use the (surprisingly simple) controls that help ferry visitors up and down the line. To join, call Chris Heck at 651-249-5358 or e-mail hecimovich@mac.com.
