Minneapolis Readers React to Rolling Stone Cover of Accused Boston Bomber

Are you boycotting the latest issue of Rolling Stone?

By now, you’ve seen the cover. The July edition of Rolling Stone sports a self portrait of the accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

By now, you’ve seen the local reaction. Drug stores, like Minneapolis's CVS and Walgreens, say they will not carry the magazine, in a protest of sorts.

But we want to know: Will you, personally, protest the racey editorial decision? A Nashua Patch blogger said that he intends to boycott the “advertisers of Rolling Stone magazine.”

On Wednesday, we asked Minneapolis residents what they thought about the magazine cover. Southwest Minneapolis Patch's Facebook friends said the following:

  • Mary Hirsch: The problem is if they start to censor magazines because of their covers then the next step is to censor them because of their content. It is not CVS or Walgreen's job to do that. Both of these establishments have no problems selling Playboy or Penthouse or the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition -- and these are offensive to a lot of people. Censorship, even when it seems to be "common sense," is a step in the wrong direction. I hate this cover and I think RS did the wrong thing to put him on the cover but I show my feelings by not buying it.
  • Sharon Ramirez: Agree w SW Mpls Patch -- no to this kind of censorship

Do you have an opinion about the cover? Will you stop buying the magazine? Will you stop going to the stores that sell it?
