Minneapolis Becomes 254th Yellow Ribbon Network

The community was recognized at Sunday's Vikings game.

Minneapolis was officially welcomed as Minnesota’s 254th Yellow Ribbon Network at Sunday’s Vikings game, according to a Department of Defense release.

The Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program is a campaign that creates awareness and builds support networks for members of the Minnesota National Guard and their families. Qualifying to be a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon group is not a quick action. It requires a 16-step process that takes a year to 18 months.

Minnesota’s 254 Yellow Ribbon Networks are made up of 199 cities, 33 companies and 22 counties.

"Yellow Ribbon Networks improve the wellness and resiliency of service members, their employers and military family members. Our partnerships and relationships with civilian and governmental agencies allow us to provide the best service, training and support to our Service members and their families," the release quoted Maj. Gen. Richard C. Nash, the Minnesota National Guard adjutant general.
In celebration, the city placed a banner on the City Hall Clock Tower and lit the Interstate 35W Bridge and several buildings downtown yellow.

"The men and women of the Minnesota National Guard, other U.S. forces, and their families, have earned our admiration and appreciation. They have also earned our continuing assistance,” the release quoted Gov. Mark Dayton. “I thank the City of Minneapolis for joining over 200 Yellow Ribbon cities, counties, and businesses who have committed to support our Minnesota heroes when they return home."
