UPDATED: Foot of Snow Still Possible Monday and Tuesday

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Southwest Minneapolis and the surrounding area.

Yet another winter storm is slated to hit the Twin Cities Sunday night, dropping heavy snow through Monday and bringing some windy conditions to make the morning commute difficult.

winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (see below). The storm, the third in four weeks, should drop its heaviest snow overnight Sunday into Monday.

Weather service forecasters say that up to 12 inches of snow may fall in some areas of Minnesota including Wright and Hennepin counties. Between six to 10 inches of snow is expected.

The track of the storm is still uncertain, the weather service said, but the metro should, after more than four days of above average temps and some actual snow melt, see a good dose of new precipitation.

Update 1:28 p.m. 3/4/13: The NWS issued a revised storm warning at 12:19 p.m. on Monday. According to its hourly forecast charts, much of the snow will come between Monday evening at 7 p.m. and Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The revised storm warning:

...HEAVY SNOW RETURNS TONIGHT...  

AT NOON LIGHT SNOW WAS LOCATED ALONG THE MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN BORDER AND WILL CONTINUE TO SLOWLY PUSH EAST THIS AFTERNOON AS IT DIMINISHES. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES WERE COMMON THROUGH THIS MORNING ACROSS MINNESOTA. IN ADDITION, SOME BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WAS BEING REPORTED DUE TO BRISK SOUTHEAST WINDS AT 15 TO 25 MPH.

THE SNOW WILL INCREASE IN INTENSITY TONIGHT ACROSS EASTERN MINNESOTA AND WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN...AS AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE SLIDES SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE REGION. MODERATE TO LOCALLY HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED DURING THE NIGHT AND TUESDAY MORNING BEFORE DIMINISHING TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

BY LATE IN THE DAY ON TUESDAY, SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO 10 INCHES ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA AND WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN. THE AXIS OF HIGHEST SNOWFALL ACCUMULATION IS FORECAST NEAR THE MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN BORDER AREA. SOME STORM TOTALS COULD APPROACH 12 INCHES.

A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST TUESDAY.

TIMING: TWO PERIODS OF SNOW EXPECTED. THE FIRST THIS MORNING THROUGH EARLY THIS AFTERNOON WITH THE SECOND TONIGHT AND TUESDAY. SOME FREEZING DRIZZLE POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON. THE SNOW TONIGHT AND TUESDAY WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES.

MAIN IMPACTS: SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 6 TO 10 INCHES WITH ISOLATED AMOUNTS NEAR 12 INCHES, LIKELY BY TUESDAY EVENING.

OTHER IMPACTS: EASTERLY WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH TODAY WILL RESULT IN SOME BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW IN OPEN AREAS. SIMILAR WIND SPEEDS...BUT OUT OF THE NORTHWEST DURING THE DAY TUESDAY WILL BRING A RETURN TO BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW.

  • A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. 
  • SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. 
  • IF YOU MUST TRAVEL, KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT, FOOD, AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
