Crews Begin Grading; Bus Pads Coming Soon: Nicollet Avenue Reconstruction Update

Nicollet Avenue South is now closed from 36th Street to about half way between 37th and 38th streets for the second phase of the avenue's reconstruction project.

Crews are still hard at work on Nicollet Avenue South.

Thomas and Sons, the contractor handling the project, has begun with the subgrade grading and adding gravel work on the north end of the project area and will work south, according to an update from the city. Weather permitting, crews will begin some concrete work this week or early next, including installation of some of the bus pads.

Businesses are open during construction and local access to them, as well as residences, will be maintained. As for traffic detours, buses and vehicles have been rerouted to 1st and Blaisdell avenues.

Nicollet Avenue was originally constructed in 1954 and an asphalt overlay was done in 1977, according to the project's webpage. The first phase of the reconstruction project was completed at the end of the 2012 construction season, and focused on the area between Lake and 36th streets. The second and final phase will revamp Nicollet from 36th Street to 40th Street.

The final product will feature two traffic lanes, one in each direction, with partking on both sides. In addition, the project includes the removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveways, sidewalks, and storm drain inlets.

These meetings are to provide an opportunity to learn what is happening with the construction and share potential issues and concerns.   At this point, meetings will be scheduled for the 1stand 3rd Thursday of May and June.
