City Church to Open New Doors Easter Sunday

After starting worship meetings at a local elementary school, the church has grown big enough for its own pile of bricks.

After spending four months renovating the former Southwest Community Church, City Church will open its doors to the public Easter Sunday in a new building on West 54th Street and Humbolt Avenue.

According to a church press release, City Church is an urban daughter church of Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, and has flourished since its inception in 2005.

The church began with a core group of 70 attendees meeting at Armatage Elementary School. Now the church has grown to more than 250 Sunday morning participants, the release said. And to meet the needs of the expanding congregation, the church secured its first permanent building in the city.

“We’re excited by the opportunity the new space offers us to better serve the ministry needs of families and residents,” John Sommerville, City Church Pastor, said in the release. “Armatage was a great place to establish a congregation, and we hope families will join us in the new space just a few blocks down the road.”

“Revitalizing the once vacant building is our first step to serving as good neighbors," said Sommerville. "And we’re looking forward to our congregation becoming part of the community."

Some of the renovations include a remodeled lobby and commons area, a new handicap accessible restroom, audio and video upgrades, and lots of fresh paint. In addition to contracted work, more than 2,000 volunteer hours have prepared the building for the official opening, the release said.

An open house is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Saturday, March 30. The building is located at 1501 W. 54th St. in Southwest Minneapolis. Easter Sunday services will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. For more information on city church, go to citychurchmpls.org.
