Asphalt, Traffic Change Coming Soon: Nicollet Avenue Reconstruction Update

Parts of Nicollet Avenue South are now closed from 36th Street to about half way between 37th and 38th streets for the second phase of the avenue's reconstruction project.

In the next couple days, the first of three layers of asphalt are scheduled to be laid on the north side of the Nicollet Avenue South construction area.

Thomas and Sons crews, the contractor for this year's project, has also completed installation on some of the concrete bus pads and grading and graveling the area between 36th Street and the north half of the intersection of 38th Street and Nicollet Avenue.

According to a recent update from the Minneapolis Department of Public Works, traffic changes are coming:

"When Thomas and Sons is complete with laying down the 3 layers of asphalt on the north half of the intersection of 38th St and Nicollet Ave, traffic will shift from the south side of the intersection to the north side. They will begin pavement removals on the south half of the intersection and continue removals to just past the driveway to Nicollet ACE Hardware. This could happen as soon as late next Tuesday."

Businesses are open during construction and local access to them, as well as residences, will be maintained. As for traffic detours, buses and vehicles have been rerouted to 1st and Blaisdell avenues.

Nicollet Avenue was originally constructed in 1954 and an asphalt overlay was done in 1977, according to the project's webpage. The first phase of the reconstruction project was completed at the end of the 2012 construction season, and focused on the area between Lake and 36th streets. The second and final phase will revamp Nicollet from 36th Street to 40th Street.

The final product will feature two traffic lanes, one in each direction, with partking on both sides. In addition, the project includes the removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveways, sidewalks, and storm drain inlets.

Information on the next update meeting is below:

Public Works will hold construction update meetings. These meetings are to provide an opportunity to learn what is happening with the construction and share potential issues and concerns.   At this point, meetings will be scheduled for the 1stand 3rd Thursday of May and June. We may adjust the frequency of the meetings based on needs and meeting attendance.
