All Old Pavement Removed From the South 38th: Nicollet Avenue Reconstruction Update

Crews are working to finish the second phase of reconstruction this summer.

Despite the rainy week, Thomas and Sons crews were still hard at work on the reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue South this week.

According to a recent update from the Minneapolis Department of Public Works, four layers of asphalt have been laid on the north end (36th Street to the north half of 38th Street) of the project area. A fifth layer is planned for Saturday. Crews also installed the curbs and gutters Tuesday, and are scheduled to start sidewalks next week.

As for the south half of the project area, pavement removals are complete on the south half of 38th Street to ACE Hardware . Next week utility work is on the agenda, and late next week we could see the first layer of pavement in that section as well, according to public works.

Nicollet Avenue was originally constructed in 1954 and an asphalt overlay was done in 1977, according to the project's webpage. The first phase of the reconstruction project was completed at the end of the 2012 construction season, and focused on the area between Lake and 36th streets. The second and final phase will revamp Nicollet from 36th Street to 40th Street.

Businesses are open during construction and local access to them, as well as residences, will be maintained. As for traffic detours, buses and vehicles have been rerouted to 1st and Blaisdell avenues. Right now, traffic can enter ACE Hardware from the south.

Another community meeting will be held later this month:

Where: Butter Bakery Café, 3700 Nicollet Ave.
When: 9 a.m. on June 20
The final product will feature two traffic lanes, one in each direction, with partking on both sides. In addition, the project includes the removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveways, sidewalks, and storm drain inlets.
