60th Street to Close; Sewers Nearly Done: Penn Avenue Reconstruction Update

The first phase of the reconstruction began in April and is expected to last the entirety of the 2013 construction season.

Despite lots of rain in the past few weeks, crews are still hard at work on reconstructing a portion of Penn Avenue South.

According to the Minneapolis Department of Public Works, the following details what crews were working on this past week:

  • Meyer is finishing up the construction of storm sewers between 58th and 54th Streets
  • Meyer will be prepping for paving next week between W 58th and about 100 feet north of W 56th St.
  • CenterPoint Energy has installed the new gas main between 59th and 53th Streets. The line is now in service and all individual service connections have been completed.
  • City of Minneapolis continues to place concrete between W 60th and W 58th Streets.
  • The City of Minneapolis will be placing the second lift of asphalt between W 60th to just north of W 58th St. June 14.
  • The City’s Traffic Department has placed conduit for signals and lighting between W 60th and W 58th Streets and will be working on installing conduit at W 56th St this weekend.
  • The City removed the signal at W 60th St. to prepare for the next stage of removals on the south end of the project.

The current project is just the first of two phases. The revamp will include removal and replacement of the pavement, curb and gutter, driveway aprons, storm drain inlets, and signal upgrades. Phase I is expected to take the entirety of the 2013 construction season.

Here's what crews will work on during the week of June 17:

Meyer will begin removals on Monday, June 17 from the north side of the Highway 62 frontage road (also called West 62nd) to just north of West 60th Street. This transition will involve closing the intersection of 60th Street. The intersection will likely be closed for two or three weeks while underground utility work is completed and that the roadway will be closed for approximately four weeks, and then closed for one- to three-day intervals for paving and concrete work.

  • Meyer will begin the removals at the intersection of W 60th St. and Penn Ave. and work south and will be starting on the east side of Penn Ave.
  • Michel’s will be removing abandoned gas main between Mn 62 and W 60th St.
  • On Thursday, June 20, the City of Minneapolis will be paving from just north of the W 58th St intersection to approximately 100 feet north of the W 56th St intersection. This work will require a closure of Penn Avenue and the intersections of W 57th and W 56th while the paving is completed.
  • On Friday, June 21, the City of Minneapolis will start placing concrete curb and gutter from just north of the W 58th St intersection to approximately 100 feet north of the 56th St intersection. This work will require a closure of Penn Avenue and the intersections of W 57th and W 56th while the curb is place.
  • On Saturday, June 22, concrete crews are tentatively scheduled to place driveways and bus pads in the area north of the W 58th St intersection to approximately 100 feet north of the 56th St intersection. Once your driveway is poured you will need to stay off of it for about a week so it can cure properly.
