40th & Nicollet Intersection Closes Monday After Surprise Find

Crews have been working on the second phase of the reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue since April 2013.

The intersection at 40th Street and Nicollet Avenue will close for two weeks starting Monday, July 15 after workers discovered some unexpected items underground.

According to the Southwest Journal, workers discovered a large underground electrical duct they did not anticipate. They will reevaluate the intersection's reconstruction, and may need to revise the storm sewer design.

Thomas and Sons, the contractor on the project, is committed to working long hours to reopen the intersection as soon as possible, the journal said.

In an update on the project, the City of Minneapolis said:

Thomas and Sons should be wrapping up the storm sewer work between 38th and 40th soon. They are also working on the subgrade. Next week they should be able to start with the gravel base. They will also be working on the intersection of 40th St and Nicollet Ave. With the number of utilities in the intersection and the work required, the intersection will need to be closed for 2 weeks starting Monday, July 15th. Starting the week of the 22nd, they will begin with the asphalt and curb and gutter work between 38th and 40th St. Please see the attached for more information regarding the closure and information of the intersection detour.
