The past five years has seen an explosion of compilations of international funk singles and rarities. Ranging from tunes from across Africa to India to Thailand,  these compilations have been popularized by familiar labels such as Analog Africa, Light in the Attic Records and Minneapolis' very own Secret Stash Records.   The latest release from Secret Stash, Persian Funk celebrates the funky world of pre-revolution Iran. Combining the traditional music of the Persian Gulf with elements of Blaxploitation and the occasional American soul cover, Persian Funk creates a sound that can only be …
After years of touring and a growing catalog of releases, Daughters of the Sun continue to maintain a reputation as one of the most forward thinking bands in the Twin Cities. More than just your typical psychadelic band, DOTS takes it's cues from Kraut, Punk, traditional music of India and Japan and the British Space Rock bands of the 1970's. Perhaps most impressive about Daughters, their sound is distinctively now, not a kitschy rewrite of a bygone psychedelic era.Daughters of the Sun's latest release, a cassette put out by Iowa's Night People, is their darkest release to date. Listen to it …
The latest recording by local electronic weirdo Albert Elmore, 'The Albert Record' marks a prolific moment for both Albert (as he goes by onstage) and his label, Totally Gross National Product. As Albert gains more prominence in the local electronic music scene, Totally Gross National Product is in the midst of a long string of releases that promises to be an exciting moment for Twin Cities music. Just one cog in the diverse machinery of Totally Gross, 'The Albert Record' ranges from elements of classic Tangerine Dream to hypnotic drone to melodic new age. Both epic and minimal at the same …
One of the Twin Cities premier tape labels, Moon Glyph gained national attention after releasing a prolific compilation of local bands titled Regolith. Since then, the Moon Glyph catalog has exploded. The label now features releases by Food Pyramid, Camden, Ghost Band and others. Moon Glyph is a cross-section of the Twin Cities rich psychedelic, drone, synth and avant-garde scenes.  And the tapes are cheap, which is great for both connoisseurs and Twin Cities newbies interested in discovering what's happening. And as Moon Glyph grows, so does its diversity. Their past two releases include …
Most known for his stint as lead singer in the krautrock juggernaut Can in the 1970s, Damo Sazuki has since zig-zagged the globe, focusing primarily on live recordings and performances. This 45RPM 7" record is special because it was released by the Twin Cities very own record label MPLS LTD. Fall of the Fire Bird is very raw and very live — a must for lovers and collectors of anything German, Japanese and very far out.   *And a special note of gratitude to MPLS LTD for having the guts to simply asking Damo if he would be interested in releasing the record.  Apparently, he said yes.
