With the closing of Bayers Do It Best Hardware on Saturday, Linden Hills will lose its "unofficial mayor."
Sure, Bob Bayers will still live in the neighborhood and will still be seen around town, but by his own admission, he'll be absorbed in finding a new line of work to support himself into retirement and deciding the fate of his soon-to-be-former store's building. He and his ex-wife own the building together.
Starting in the mid-1970's, as he took on more roles at what was then his father's store, Bayers took on bigger roles in the neighborhood.
It started small—lending his voice to the Linden Hills Neighborhood Council's yearly auction in pre-silent auction days—but soon expanded.
The neighborhood connection led to his serving on the Council for 15 years, and growing into a leader among the neighborhood's businesses. He also became the "Worshipful Master," or leader, of the Lake Harriet Masonic Lodge. On top of that, he also served on the board of the Minnesota Transportation Museum, and drove the museum's streetcars during the summer.
In between driving the streetcar, being a visible part of the neighborhood's summer festivals, and just forming a regular part of everyone's life as the head man at the neighborhood hardware store, he became known to some as the "unofficial mayor of Linden Hills."
One of the people who knew Bayers this way was Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak.
"I grew up in the neighborhood, and I remember going to his store next to the grocery when I was just a little kid," Rybak told Patch. "My parents ran a corner store and I know it takes an incredible amount of energy and hard work to be able to chart your own path like that."
"He has a studied surliness that's part of his charm and humor," Rybak said.
In other words, he likes to pretend he's grumpy as a way of being friendly.
"He wears his heart on the outside," said Jim Sample, a friend of Bayers'. "He's a big guy, and I'm a big guy. I can identify with his size, but in him, it's all heart."
"He's one of those unusual people who thinks of everybody else first," Sample added.
The 9-11 memorial concerts Bayers organized year-in and year-out were an example, Sample said.
Bayers really came into his own as a neighborhood leader in the months following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., Rybak said.
"At a time when the community was really wrestling" with those horrible events, Rybak said, " He developed one of the more beautiful and ongoing ceremonies."
Rybak said he was surprised to find himself looking forward to Sept. 11.
"It's been a way to take all the rough emotions and elevate ourselves, and not be mired in hatred," Rybak said.
Last year, Bayers handed the concert over to a volunteer committee that included Sample. The sheer scale and depth of Bayers' contacts around Linden Hills and Minneapolis became clear, Sample said, as Bayers briefed the group on who they could turn to for financing and organizing help.
"At one of our first meetings, (Bayers) came up with six type-written sheets of paper that had all the contacts he could think of off the top of his head," Sample said. "They were all people Bob worked with over the years. It was an example of the very nice, winning way he has about him. You just like being around him."
When Bayers announced he was closing his store earlier this summer, long-time customers flooded his store for the closeout sale. While Patch interviewed Bayers about the closing, several interrupted to wish Bayers well. Rybak joined in two weeks later, declaring Aug. 11, 2012 to be "Bob Bayers Day" in Minneapolis, coinciding with Bayers' retirement party.
"I want him to know how much the people of this city appreciate his family's near-century of contributions to our city," he said.

Robert A "The 9/11 Tribute Concert at Lake Harriet Bandshell (which is not really a tribute but a show) put on by Bob Bayer has become very controversial. Immediately after 9 11 most saw it as appropriate. But as the years went on (it has been more than 10 years) most people saw it as inappropriate, and it became more of a tribute to al-Qaeda, a celebration of the Terrorists attacks. They even have firework displays at the 9 11 show, how sick is that, they did everything but reenact 9 11. Why doesn’t Bob Bayer put on a tribute to our brave veterans from all wars, why not a tribute to our brave fireman and police.
The worst was when this 9 11 show keeps stating that the guy from Bloomington is a hero (the lets role guy) for bringing down a plane over Pennsylvania. The bipartisan 9/11 Commission stated that this was not true years ago. Lies weakens our great country (God Bless the USA), and only helps our enemies.
The terrorist killed 2,973 victims on 9 11, but we are a strong nation, and have overcome much worse. The USA moves on and becomes stronger. The 9 11 show is UN American in that is wallows in self-pity.
I knew people who died in 9 11, and I (like most others) find the 9 11 show distasteful. It is an insult to the victims of 9 11, it is an insult to our brave fireman, police, and our armed forces. . It is an insult to our great country the United States of America. I know a lot of fellow veterans who stopped going to Bayer’s Do It Best Hardware because of this"

Pretty ironic that the in these comments criticizing Bob Bayers for his prickliness are in themselves so mean spirited. Bob was not always as congenial as possible, and he suffered in business for it, but he also did a great deal for the community. Why kick him when he is down? If the commenter’s have been wishing Bob ill, their wish was granted. Now it’s time to show some quiet class. And on the bitter denunciation of the 9-11 concerts; I guess there are always a few people can cast a pall on anything.

@ Robert, you are right, the 9/11 celebration is gone very very wrong.
It started off good in the first year, but now it is just a PUBLICITY STUNT, and a place where people show FAKE Patriotism, and as an excuse to have a concert.
You are right “I knew people who died in 9 11, and I (like most others) find the 9 11 show distasteful. It is an insult to the victims of 9 11, it is an insult to our brave fireman, police, and our armed forces.”
I also knew people who died in 9/11, and they would be horrified by this celebration.
They should stop the 9/11 Tribute Concert at Lake Harriet Bandshell, for all the reasons you described and too many reasons too list here.
@ Robert, Thank you and all Veterans for their service to our country. And a Thank You to our brave heroes in the police and fire departments.

Please stop the Bob Bayers is the "Unofficial Mayor" of Linden Hills stuff. It is not true and only has people dislike Bob Bayer more. I would say 98% of the people do not think of Bob Bayer as the "Unofficial Mayor" of Linden Hills. In fact his grumpy and surliness turned a lot of people against him, and hurt his business. His friends may have liked his personality, but the majority of people do not like to be around grumpy and surly people, and they do not like to do business with these people.
“"He has a studied surliness that's part of his charm and humor," Rybak said. In other words, he likes to pretend he's grumpy as a way of being friendly.”
sandy d “Bayers Hardware may be gone, but Linden Hills has a better replacement that has become the “pillar of the neighborhood” in Settergren's Ace Hardware (25 feet away, just around the corner). And Settergren's Ace Hardware is a small family business serving Minneapolis Minnesota for over 100 years.

I am sad for his loss but in the end one had to survive.
Settergrens has shown their community support and their top notch customer service and product line in their short time in LH and I am glad they came out on top. Bob was a bitter person who really was not at all helpful in the end and it showed. It is no surprise.

Bob Bayers showed who he is. At his retirement party at his store a couple of weeks ago at mid-day Saturday, part of his going out of business sales, open to the public. He had a table to show the history of Bayers hardware in front of the store on the sidewalk.
On the table he had three framed pictures, 1. Of his store Dog, 2. one of himself and his mother 3. One of his father. Not a single picture of any of the many family members that worked in the store over the last 90 years. Not a single picture of an employee (not even Joe who worked there for 15 years and ran the store, or the friendly employees like Mike where the only reason people set foot in the store.). Not a picture of his own children. By his actions he showed he valued his dead dog over people (yes the dog died years ago).
When I asked about this, I found out that Bob did value his dog above his employees, customers, family members, and his own kids. Bobs actions proved this.
Everybody in Linden Hills has been talking about this for weeks.
Bobs bitter, grumpy, surliness, insulting personality is real.
He is not the "Unofficial Mayor" of Linden Hills, he is an embarrassment. Linden Hills is a friendly place, and we are kid, caring people.

I agree with the majority of people who find the The 9/11 Tribute Concert at Lake Harriet Bandshell appalling.
As a person who has lost a friend in 9/11, and has a grandson serving our country in the armed forces, I find the The 9/11 Tribute Concert at Lake Harriet Bandshell disgusting.
I agree with the reasons above for disliking the 9/11 show. This show should not be allowed to continue, it is insulting. As a Veteran, I fought for this country, and for freedom of speech, so this insulting show is allowed to go on. But everyone I know that has lost someone on 9/11, or knows someone serving our country, all hate the 9/11 Tribute Concert at Lake Harriet Bandshell.

Oh geeze- One would think a national monument or something was closing.
And let's HOPE that the 911 Tribute will stop. I stopped going three years ago as I could not stand those smarmy tv people up there. Just awful. I find no record of Pearl Harbor, VE or VJ Day tributes happening years and years after the event.

@ Bob B, Thanks for the links on Bayers and Settergren Hardware articles. Two Hardware Stores Battle Over Linden Hills http://tcbmag.com/Industries/Retail-and-Hospitality/Capitalist-Tools?page=3 and What Really Happened Between Bayers and Settergren? http://southwestminneapolis.patch.com/articles/what-really-happened-between-bayers-and-settergren
Very informative. Bob Bayers (whose Hardware store was struggling) says he tried to bring two hardware retailers to buy the Co-Op building 25 feet away from his store. He tried to get them to buy the Co-Op building in Linden Hills, his inventory, hire his employees, and hire Bob Bayers himself to manage the store with a big contract. Bob Bayers would then sell his store.
The two hardware stores bidding for the Co-Op building where: Jerry’s Do it Best Hardware, is a part of the Jerry’s organization, a successful billion dollar operation that operates many retailers, and Frattallone’s Ace Hardware, which owns 18 stores in the Twin Cities.
Since Settergren’s owns two Hardware stores within a mile of the Linden Hills building, they were forced to buy the Co-op building, or face a very strong competitor that would take a good amount of business away from them. Settergren’s had no choice but to buy the Co-Op.
After Settergren’s purchased the Linden Hills store, Bob Bayers refused Settergren’s offer of a merger, or to buy Bayers business.
So Bob Bayers brought this all on himself, has only himself to blame.

As a college age student, I can say people in my age group find the 9/11 Tribute Concert at Lake Harriet sick, disgusting, twisted, strange. And shooting off fireworks while having a 9/11 show, is definitely twisted, the people who put this show on definitely have some deep psychological problems. And the people that go to this show also have deep psychological problems.
It is an embarrassment to Linden Hills, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the United states.
I am glad to see people of all groups and walks of life want this strange 9/11 show to end.
I agree with “I knew people who died in 9 11, and I (like most others) find the 9 11 show distasteful. I am from New York and had a family member die on 9/11. I think what you are doing is shameful. The people who put this show on and the people who attend this 9/11 show have to be the most cold hearted, publicity seeking people in the world.
The people that dress up in 1776 military uniforms and other fashion outfits, you got to be kidding me! Why don’t you just scream look at me, look at me. How is this being respectful of the men and women and children who died on 9 11?
I agree with sandy d: it is just a PUBLICITY STUNT, and a place where people show FAKE Patriotism, and as an excuse to have a concert. Mayor “Rybak said he was surprised to find himself looking forward to Sept. 11.” Very Bizarre. What are you looking forward to: having a big party with fireworks? Celebrating 3,000 innocent people who died? Or the people who suffered injuries or medical conditions that did not allow them to have full lives?
Celebrating 10 terrorists taking down the twin towers in New York? Starting the fall of the American economy? Celebrating no matter how advanced the military is, the United States of America will never be safe again?
Anybody who attends this 9/11 celebration show should get psychological help, and please never come to New York.

Joe who worked Bayers Hardware in Linden Hills for 15 years and completely ran the store, and friendly employees like Mike where the only reason people set foot in the store.

Seems supporters of Settergren's Ace Hardware in Linden Hills are dominating this board. I think the only reason is the people who are boycotting Settergren's Ace Hardware, are just waiting the store out. It will be closed soon.
The rumors of Settergren's Ace Hardware in Linden Hills being in trouble appear to be true. This is proved by the fact that “Joe and Mike from Bayers Hardware are now working at Settergren's Ace Hardware in Linden Hills.” So Bayers Hardware employees have to save Settergren's. As Bob Bayer trained Joe and Mike, what does that tell you? That Bob Bayer was a better manager than the Settergren's. And having Joe manage the store show that Settergren's is not really a family store. And Settergren's is not loyal to their long time employees. I feel sorry for the long term Settergren's employees who duties where replaced by Joe and Mike.
I will post a few comments below from the patch article What Really Happened Between Bayers and Settergren? http://southwestminneapolis.patch.com/articles/what-really-happened-between-bayers-and-settergren
But to get the full flavor of the variety of opinions, readers should out all the comments.
BTW, I do agree the 9/11 celebration is an abomination and should have been stopped years ago. I don’t think Bob Bayers ever understood how much this hurt his reputation and business.

"IMHO “Settegren's Ace Hardware in Linden Hills closing soon; will be gone in a couple of years.
How is Settegren's going to compete against all the other large and small neighborhood hardware stores nearby? the nearby opening soon Menards store on 494 and Nicollet, Minneapolis Minnesota? The new Menards store will take business away from both the Settegren’s Hardware on 54th and Penn, and their store in Linden Hills. Settegren's stores a mile apart, cannibalize each other’s business.
Price of Shovels Grills etc. near 40% cheaper at nearby Menards, Target, Home Depot, Wal-Mart. Menards and Home Depot have customer service, more selection, better quality.
Settegren's made a very bad move coming to Linden Hills. The location is hard to get to, a lake on one side and only through residential neighborhoods on other sides. The store is 3 times larger than Bayer’s. Settegren’s will never attract enough business to be profitable.
Hennepin County tax records paid $1,500,000 for the building on 2813 West 43rd Strret. That is before remodeling costs, let’s give that $500,000. So they start off with a debt of $2 million. And they have other expenses. And the taxes are $52,996.76. They may have won the bidding battle by severely overpaying, but they will lose the war...
Didn’t Settegren’s Notice that the only businesses that succeed in Linden Hills are restaurants and small business, and most retail businesses fail in Linden Hills?”

Yes, if you are unique, places like 50th and France where small businesses can thrive, but for every example like that there are dozens who have failed. And with Bob Bayer’s family Hardware leaving, there is nothing historic or unique in Linden Hills. It is basically a strip mall. The only things unique are the restaurants. There is nothing historic or unique about Settergren's Ace Hardware except convince of location, and there are several competitors close by.
Look at all the businesses that have failed in Linden Hills, Chaize store has sat empty for a year. Look at all the failed businesses and empty sites at Excelsior and Grand (by highway 100). Or the failure of the 50th and Xerxes site. Even Uptown small businesses are being replaced by major retailers.

As a business person, I would say this was a bad move on Mark Settergren’s part.
Based on observations, articles and rumors, he is already in trouble.
Having 3 Hardware stores within a mile of each other is insane.
I frequent his store on 54th and Penn, and they have been pushing people to go to the Linden Hills store. And the business at the 54th and Penn store has dropped like a rock. Talking to some people, they say the store is in big trouble, and they fear what is going to happen when the nearby new Menards store on 494 and Nicollet opens.
At the same time, rumor has it the Linden Hills Settergren's Ace Hardware store is not doing well and is struggling. People now say that Mark Settergren is so concerned that he is going to hire the employees from Bayer’s Do It Best Hardware to turn around the Linden Hills Settergren's store, and Mark Settergren will concentrate on trying to save the 54th and Penn store.
Bidding $1.5 million for a store and spending even more for remodeling, and outbidding 10 other bidders is troubling.
Mark Settergren should not expect neighborhood support, since he feels he was morally right driving Bob Bayer’s Family Hardware store out of business. Since he feels justified using the Capitalism, Tea Party, Michele Bachmann theories, then he has to live by them. As others have said “Live by the sword, die by the sword. Linden Hills will turn into nothing more than a strip mall.
We cannot call it historic Linden Hills any more.
With Bayers Family Hardware store closing after 90 years, we only have recent businesses. It is sad. A big part of Linden Hills will die when Bayers finally closes its doors.
Within a few years the Linden Hills business district will be dead, there is nothing unique or historic in Linden Hills anymore. Nearby Excelsior and Grand (by highway 100) project has failed, and the 50th and Xerxes project has failed, Linden Hills will follow their failures. Customers have a lot of choices with retailers (50th and France, the Mega Mall, Uptown, internet, etc.), and there is no reason for them to come to Linden Hills anymore.
It is a sad time, some day we are going to look back and regret our short sightedness, we are going to regret the closing of Bayers Family Hardware.Joseph Albright“This will all end in tears”

Bob Bayers should have left with class, instead we get the typical “It is all about me, Bob’s bitter, grumpy, surliness, and insulting personality is real, turned a lot of people against him, and hurt his business.”
1.The retirement party, part of his going out of business sale, open to the public. Only 3 framed pictures proudly displayed: his dad, his mom and him, and his dead dog. “Bob did value his dog above his employees, customers, family members who worked at the store, and his own kids. Bob’s actions proved this.”
2.Instead of a closing of a 90 year family business, it is his retirement party.
3.Even after Bayers Hardware closed for good, he leaves a note on the front door talking about how great he is, and everything he has done.
4.He keeps bragging about the Minnesota 9/11 tribute. He made it all about him. He never realized 90% of the people hated this show “ “people dislike him and business associated with this sick, disgusting, twisted, strange 9/11 show.” I am glad people boycotted the people and business associated with this 9/11 strange bizarre party.”

If only there was a way to open a store where people could go in and complain about every dreary aspect of their neighborhood, while offering no solutions, and then go on a tirade about change and how horrible it is. If only a store like that existed, we would have a booming economy in Linden Hills. The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know......at least Settergren's is a locally owned business. Wishing them ill is all but inviting a national chain. Progress is not always packaged, polished & wrapped up in a bow exactly as we wish it were personally, but the alternative is stagnation. It looks to me that Linden Hills has a couple of clear choices to make. We can be happy that we still have a hardware store located conveniently for those quick runs when something breaks on a Saturday afternoon or Wednesday evening, or we can choose to ignore it and drive out to Home Depot. We can be excited to support the next local business that takes over Bob's space, or we can throw mud at whoever dares try to succeed there. Our neighborhood will be shaped by the doers. Those who choose to character assassinate, scream bloody murder at the state of the village will only become more spiteful, more hollow and more frustrated, until they fall in on themselves with rage - polarizing and marginalizing themselves along the way. Good for Bob for getting out, he clearly didn't have the popularity he thought he did. May he enjoy his retirement.

@ D Moss you are right.
But don’t let the negative comments about Settergren’s Ace Hardware in Linden Hills fool you.
I think they are written by the few friends Bitter Bob Bayers has left.
I have lived in Linden Hills for over 35 years and know 99% of the people love Settergren’s Ace Hardware in Linden Hills. They really became a bright spot in the community in a short period of time. You can tell that people love Settergren’s, they flock to the store, and people have been boycotting Bob Bayers Hardware store.
Bob Bayers earned his nickname Bitter Bob. You are right “Good for Bob for getting out, he clearly didn't have the popularity he thought he did.” Bitter Bob Bayers has very few friends left. The reasons are listed in the comments above by Traci , Ben and others.

I agree with David S. I personally do not like Bob Bayers and is not sad to see his hardware go but after reading all his contributions to the community, I cannot help but defend him for at least trying to be a decent person, regardless of his personality or lack there of. All the nasty comments about his 9/11 tribute being misplaced is more inappropriate than the people that show up to it. I never been but I am pretty sure Bob does not mean any harm and does not mean to celebrate Al Queda. The comments here are pretty nasty and tasteless. I actually feel sorry for Bob in this regard because he may be self centered but not malicious.
As far as the Settergrens business decision to over bid and pay to be in Linden Hills, I do not know why a new Menards off of 494 is going to make that much of a difference to his business when the people who value the small independent local business will always buy local and will support their business and then there are others who want to spend less but are willing to drive farther to support the big box retailers. Those people have their right to do so but are not the demographic Setteregrens is catering to. They do not have the excellent customer service just lower prices. Frankly, those people should live in the Suburbs if that is who they want to support but true LH Residents are more socially conscience than that and prefer buying local.

@ Leah
Nasty and tasteless is how the 9/11 tribute in Linden Hills is described by a friend from New York who lost his wife in 9/11 and has a son serving in the Army.
I agree with “It started off good in the first year, but now it is just a PUBLICITY STUNT, and a place where people show FAKE Patriotism, and as an excuse to have a concert. You are right “I knew people who died in 9 11, and I (like most others) find the 9 11 show distasteful. It is an insult to the victims of 9 11, it is an insult to our brave fireman, police, and our armed forces.””
Why didn’t Bob Bayers do something productive like raise money for the victims of 9/11 or for our troops?
It is sad the 9/11 tribute is a way for people to get self-promotion from the deaths of Americans. It is clear the only reason this terrible show goes on is for self-promotion.
As Ben said “We love the USA, and your 9/11 party is anti-American and a disgrace to the memories of the 3,000 who died. Shame on you!”
Bob Bayer did not know any victims and did not serve in the military.
The 9/11 circus and a freak show, most attendees are 70 years old and up (they bus them in from retirement homes), and the rest looks like a freak show, strange outfits (1776 outfits etc), acting goofy.
People told Bob Bayers how the felt about this 9/11 party years ago, he continued, and people stopped shopping at his store and now he is out of businesses. God Bless America!

Things got a little too emotional on this topic. When you have the issues related to 9/11, people take it very personally and sometimes their emotions get the best of them.
James Sanna could you PLEASE remove all the comments, they serve no purpose other than to get people worked up.

Yes James Sanna should remove all the comments here
The Patch is becoming nothing more than a FLAME Board
Very sad, it had so much potential

Wishing the best now and in the future to everyone at Bayers Do It Best Hardware and Settergren's Ace Hardware and all the people in Linden Hills, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, and the World. I have nothing but great things to say about them all. Wishing you Joy and Happiness every day of your life.
Let’s all get along, in PEACE and HARMONY and the World will be a better place.
Put A Little Love In Your Heart
Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart
You see it's getting late
Oh please don't hesitate
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Another day goes by
And still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart
If you want the world to know
We won't let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Wait and see
Take a good look around
And if you're looking' down
Put a little love in your heart
I hope when you decide
Kindness will be your guide
Put a little love in your heart
And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see
Put a little love in your heart, Put a little love in your heart, Put a little love in your heart
