Fox 9: Building expected to be a total loss

Update 10:15 p.m. 1/24/13: According to a written statement issued by Minneapolis Fire Marshal Perry Ebner, the Beeks fire started shortly before 6 p.m. The cause is still unknown.

When fire crews arrived, the Beeks' customers and employees had already evacuated. Ebner's statement explains the course of events:

Crews first conducted an interior attack from the rear of the building.  Fire grew rapidly and forced firefighters out of the structure.  Fire Suppression tactics changed to a defensive mode as crews rapidly exited the building.  A second alarm was called for additional resources and personnel to help control the fire.  No fire extension went beyond the structure involved.  As the fire continued to grow, a third alarm was sounded.  These resources were needed due to the fire’s potential and the cold weather that was impacting both personnel and equipment.

By 6:15 p.m., two alarms had been called, and a third alarm was called shortly before 7 p.m. to provide relief crews. No civilians were harmed, but one firefighter was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center after being injured in a fall.
