Ellison Featured in CNN's 'My Faith' Year in Review

The Muslim congressman allowed a journalist to follow him for a day.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim elected to serve in the U.S. House, was featured in CNN's "My Faith" 2011 Year in Review last week. In September, CNN journalist Chris Welch followed Ellison for a day, documenting how the representative practices his faith. Ellison said he doesn't see his faith as something that makes his job harder, but rather just an aspect of who he is:

“Faith really should be a bridge, not a wall," Ellison told CNN. "Because at the end of the day we should be focusing on what you believe, not what your religion is.”

Ellison Praises Education Funding

Also last week, Rep. Ellison congratulated the state for receiving substantial federal education funding, which included a "Race to the Top" grant. In a statement, Ellison said:

“Minneapolis and the entire state have achieved outstanding results through their collaborative efforts in education reform and innovation. This funding will help ensure that youth in underserved areas of Minneapolis and the entire state can begin school prepared and ready to succeed.

The future of our nation’s success and global competitiveness depends on the quality of education our young people receive. Federal investments made to the University of Minnesota’s Child-Parent Center Education Program and the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) will improve children’s readiness and prepare them for the future.

I commend the Minnesota Department of Education for its leadership in fostering a culture of innovation, excellence, and partnership, and for making its own $60 million investment in our future.”

Ellison Responds to Boisclair Ad

After Fifth District DFL challenger Gary Boisclair—who is running so he can use a campaign loophole to air graphic anti-abortion ads—attacked Ellison in a video released last week, the congressman responded with a fundraising pitch, saying he's “a proud advocate of a woman’s right to choose as well as access to reproductive health care, but I need your support to respond to these shameless attacks,” according to a report by The Hill.

Ellison wants us to focus on what he believes and not on his religion. That is what his opponents are doing. He, by his actions, believes that Anti-Semitic, racist bigots like Farrakhan, and Anti-American individuals and groups like CAIR, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, and assorted Islamist groups are peace loving patriots who are simply misunderstood. He believes that their murderous violence is justified. He believes that government involvement is the solution to many of our most vexing economic problems, when in reality it is a large part of the problem. He believes in Federal control and direction of local issues. He believes in Socialism, not Capitalism. He will squeal like a pig at the use of that term, but his record says otherwise. He is not above accepting private money from groups, money and gifts he never would have received as a private citizen. He would have us believe that these are not bribes or unethical gifts because he disclosed them. He believes that a mother can willfully murder her In-Utero child, and that taxpayers should pay for the murder. He believes in very little that most Americans would agree with. He doesn't believe in the seriousness of our National Debt or the War Against Islamist Fascists. I don't believe in his ideas on these issues, nor much of what he believes in at all. Look at his record, not his press releases. Look closely at his actions. He should be replaced.

It is irresponsible that Patch allows hate, religious bigotry, and outright lies to be presented in this forum. Patch needs to condemn and rein in the vitriol or these pages are part of the problem with today's politics and contribute only to further division and more political tribalism in our community, further poisoning of the public square.

John,

I appreciate your comment and concern. I'm wondering what specifically you find in Mr. O'Donovan's post that contains "hate, religious bigotry, and outright lies?"

Mr. O'Donovan seems to be making an argument based on opinion. That doesn't mean Patch necessarily agrees with or supports his comments, but we do feel that we should be a place for people to share opinions—even strong ones that may draw strong pushback.

Please respond if you have further questions/comments/concerns/etc.

I do not hate Congressman Ellison. I have opposed many of his ideas and those of his associates. I have been challenged before by Mr. Haluska. He may not like my opinions, but he cannot refute the facts. I use Chapter Twenty-one Of Andrew C. McCarthy's book,"The Grand Jihad,How Islam and the Left Sabotage America" as my principle reference material, also the Star Trib and Pioneer Press.

First, the ad that is link is a lie and disgusting. Second, Kevin would use any opportunity to use that ad, and anything negative against anyone he wants without any regard to taste or truth.

I remember years ago walking the MN Capitol hall and I was approached by someone who didn't want a candidate to be successful in his run of office. The idea was to take pics of a bucket of something that looked like it was a bucket of babies and tell everyone that this is what that candidate would do if he had won. He was actually part of the "other" campaign. When I refused, or anyone else, to pay attention or take one of these fliers, we were followed and the person kept shouting at us saying the most awful things he could come up with to attack us for not playing along with him. It was pretty out there. This was "his" freedom of speech. No one arrested him by the way. It was vile, and his actions were intimidation.

Gary Boisclair is much like this candidate I remember, and that person who was on his campaign that was doing his bidding is not much different then what Kevin is doing, with the exception that with this technology - he can't scream and physically get close enough.

Happy ending to this story? That candidate was seen as a total insane person. Crazy as a bat, and his fanatic counter part has dropped off someplace unknown.

Isn't this beautiful weather?

When I was living in S.F.,Ca I worked at a Histology Lab where we received tissues samples from a number of states. These samples were soaked in xylene and then embedded in paraffin blocks to be stained, sliced and mounted on slides for diagnostics and record keeping. Most of the samples were Human Embryos. Many were vacuum sucked bits and pieces of a human child, destroyed during an abortion. Most were of the embryos were whole and complete, aborted through another D&C process. I never found anything other than human tissue. These babies were alive, perfectly formed, and fully human until someone made a most selfish decision to kill them. The film you refer to is tame compared to the reality. You could count their toes and fingers on these young bodies. You could see their ears, their lips, their eyelids, and their delicate noses. These were some body's children, deemed as some body's waste product. When did we, as a people, come to accept this as being appropriate?

Your use of "histology" reference is a neat trick, but most techs in labs are not aware of what procedures resulted in the tissues samples they work on. Your use of the term D&C is also incorrect and shows me your only purpose is to create in trying to get people upset. Your attempt to make people believe that you knew anything abt tissues samples, or any size of embryos that you claimed you have seen, before you supposedly worked on them shows your intent. Lab techs in this area of study never know. They don't know why or how the tissues came to be or what happend, and that includes embryos. Human or otherwise. Something is very wrong when people try to trick others and use tactics like you just did.

Amy, When you receive an aborted fetus from UPS, you know what it is. When you can read the name of the facility that sent it, you know where it came from. Lab techs are sometimes dealing with micro samples, we specialized in vas deferens to verify successful vasectomies, and fetuses to verify the removal for medical record keeping, and at times for legal cases where deformity, or parental responsibility became an issue. We also at times received other body parts. What you are accusing me of is typical. Let's not talk about the murderous practice of abortion. Let's question the truthfulness of the witness. The name of the clinic for your info, was Borstings Histology labratory in S.F.. It also had branches in Hawaii and Louisiana at the time I worked for them. My G.I. Bill helped fund my training and subsidized my salary. Check it out. No public apology will be necessary. I worked for them in the 1970s. I also like your inference that Human Embryos are any thing but human. They have the same skin, bones, and blood as we do.They are Human Beings.

First, if you did have such a thing, you don't know that was aborted. You say you got samples from all over the place and that you automatically would know what you were getting. The theory that these "UPS" deliveries had an actual "fetus" and that you knew what it was is awfully suspect. You know, I do know someone who spent her whole career in a Histology lab.

Amy, I used to think that abortions were a solution to a difficult situation. Good people can disagree on many subjects, but still respect the other person as being of good will. However, it doesn't mean they are right, and should not be challenged. I am not a brilliant person, but even at my advanced age I retain curiosity, and I'm open to correction. I look at correction directed at me as an act of charity. One of the first lessons of my life is the awareness that I make mistakes. I try to see things through someone else's perspective. Life is a process of continuing education and reform. Potty training is a good example. Change in both belief and practice is possible. If one lives long enough, one might even come to relive the need for diapers. Part of living is to be changing. Rigid certainty is almost an act of willful blindness. Don't let your will, or your pride get in the way of the truth, or a better way of living.

Look, whether or not you agree or disagree with abortion is not the issue here. It is how you try and manipulate people. How you lie, and twist information to try and get people upset when it isn't the truth. You do that a lot and in fact, I think it isn't just about ideologies with you - I think there is something else going on. You write your comments on Patch (and apparently other places). You promote hate, and try to scare people. You copy and paste bits and pieces of information, then add your own little untruthful twist to it. I don't find you credible at all. I don't care what your religion is, or what your social beliefs are - I care about how you purposely write things to mislead people and you don't seem to care how low you go when you do it. Your like that guy with a fake picture on the flier that was in the Capital years ago.

How is promoting an idea that saves lives hateful? How is it that any opinion or idea at variance with your own conclusion is untruthful, ignorant, or is rooted in bigotry and intolerance? Can a contrary idea be anything other than manipulative? Can it ever be charitable correction? Prejudice is simply "Pre-Judgement". It is not always an error. It is a pre-formed position. It might be a thought out idea, or not. It might reflect good upbringing, best conscience,or some fanciful idealism. There is a process, "Kenosis",where you take any idea that you have and break it down to its origin and then scrutinize it honestly. It is similar to psycho-therapy. Is your own self image true? Is what you believe to be true, inherently true or not? At its essence is the specific belief reasonable, reflective of reality or imaginative? Are you prepared to change and endure the consequences? I think we all benefit from some peaceful, incisive, self reflection,on our motivations and beliefs.Let's realize that truth is not our creation. It is something discovered. Sometimes we might not want to see it. We do not always desire the good, but only what seems to be good.

Amy is correct. I work at a lab and we are not aware of what procedures resulted in the tissues samples we receive. Kevin, your posts make you sound completely clueless about what lab techs even do. Save the internet trolling for a different site, as this is way off topic to the article anyway. This is the one time I'll reply to an internet troll on patch and I'll just ignore any posts from trolls in the future.

To get back on topic, I like that Ellison says we should be focusing on what you believe, not what your religion is. Too many politicians get wrapped up in that. I never like hearing when a politician says God told them to do something, because that voice may not be God, and it may just be schizophrenia.

Amy Z.To get back on topic, the topic is Amy P. being upset by a film dealing with graphic images related to abortion, and the issue that we were discussing was the humanity of the aborted babies, and as usual a red herring is introduced. If you go to an abortion facility, hold an aborted child in your hand, and if you can mistake it for a dead goldfish,or a fetal mouse, please let us know. The lab work I did, forty years ago, may have been handled differently, then, than at present, but it was done as I said. . Amy Z., remember the topic was Amy P. being angered at a film, that in her opinion was too graphic and offensive showing aborted babies. If God hasn't spoken to you lately, what voices do you heed? Incidentally, I am taking Ellison's advice and focusing on what he believes, or supports. If you find any non-human tissue as part of an aborted child, we can then consider the possibility it is not human. Until then let's follow the scientific evidence. The aborted baby is human, and therefore is endowed with a natural right to life. Why else would courts consider the death of an unborn child, caused by a criminal act, to be either manslaughter or murder? A person's ignorance does not necessarily preclude a possibility that something exists that is beyond a person's limited knowledge. Does it?
