There are many great opportunities, from supporting cultural spaces to helping feed the hungry.
I asked our Facebook fans for suggestions where people could volunteer this holiday season. Here are their traditional and non-traditional opportunities. Please add your own!
This relatively new non-profit space in Powderhorn is dedicated to making technology accessible and to safely disposing electronic waste. By volunteering with them, you can earn computer repair skills and, after 24 hours of volunteering, receive your own refurbished computer.
This non-profit helps feed people with terminal or serious illnesses. Volunteers can deliver meals, cook food or support the organization's administration.
This non-profit is committed to providing shelter for the homeless. The organization provides dozens of opportunities to volunteer, from serving breakfast to organizing campaings that raise awareness of issues associated with homelessness.
Leonardo's Basement is a Kingfield space dedicated to mixing arts and technology to help kids learn. Volunteers are needed to take photographs, write grants and help teachers.
Second Harvest Heartland, which expects to distribute 60 million pounds of food this year, relies on volunteers and donors to meet emergency food needs.
Bridging provides people with free, clean furniture and other household items. Individual and group volunteers are needed to help with everything from driving to answering phones.
St. Stephen's Human Services:
Originally formed as a project of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, the non-profit provides emergency shelter and social work for the homeless. Although there are many volunteer opportunities, there's a particular need for those willing to staff the shelter weekend nights.
Almost everyone who works at this non-profit live-music show space, from ticket-takers to the people selling beer, are volunteers.
