Audio of the KFAI debate.

The conversation between 5th District Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and GOP challenger Chris Fields got dirty during a heated debate on KFAI Radio Thursday morning. Both men got defensive when the other brought up sensitive subjects—namely references to one another's families and personal lives.

Listen to the low points in the audio above or visit KFAI-FM to hear the full debate.

They were both wrong. The question is who will represent out district better. I think Ellison has to go. I would like to see what Chris Fields can do.

Wow, that debate leaves me wondering if there is a third candidate. I thought we had two good candidates in this race but in thier campaign to label each other as evil they reveal thier true selves. We need folks who can run on thier record or platform and not thier ability to destroy the other candidate.

How sad, they both resorted to the lowest common denominator. Neither had the wherewithal to be the bigger man and act like a mature adult. I will make it a point to vote for neither. Congratulations, gentlemen (and I use that term loosely), you both just lost my vote.

This wasn't football, this was more like a boxing match.

I want to point out one thing. When someone pokes and pokes and pokes you (as in Fields' daily ranting in his blog on this site), is it not ok to fight back? When is it ok to throw a punch at the bully? When he runs out of material, I have no doubt that Fields will criticize Ellison for breathing wrong. I can see it coming "Ellison’s left lung favored over right” Mr. Fields, spoon feeding us “fear and consumption” is so 1980’s.

The daily slander got to Ellison and he lost his cool, for which he apologized. It is understandable and I forgive his outburst. He is human and vulnerable. He has been attacked and criticized personally and professionally on a daily basis with outright lies in Fields’ patch blog. In a perfect world, Ellison could have ignored the man as he has the impotent blog, and not have been pulled down into the mud with Fields, but it's not a perfect world. News flash, Ellison is human and passionate about his role as a leader of the people of Minneapolis. As for Fields taking the weaker path to try to win a race by painting the other guy as the enemy (and pushing him to this extreme), how about if you quit with the defamation and tell us why you are so great. Spell out your plan. Tell us why you are the man for the job instead of ranting daily about how evil and loathsome your opponent is. Then people might read it and someday you might get a comment or two.

I agree Amber. Even his campaign site is covered on doing the same thing. Some of the ads are pretty bad.

I agree with AmberG. I've seen Chris Fields blog and it gave me a bad taste in my mouth. He was totally inappropriate in this interview and seems to be inappropriate in general. The first thing I thought when I read his blog is why isn't he talking about his political beliefs and objectives instead of insulting Ellison on a personal level. If this guy is as creepy as his first impression makes him seem, it's more like he is a stalker than a legitimate candidate. Ellison is being bullied and I will be judging him on his record instead of anything involving Fields. How do you think you would sound defending yourself against somebody like Fields?
